"Many women around the world suffer disrespectful, offensive or neglectful treatment during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period". (World Health Organization)
According to the WHO, obstetric violence (O.V.) is the appropriation of women's bodies and reproductive processes by health personnel through physical abuse, humiliation and verbal abuse.
WHY VULNERABLE?
O.V. is a global problem that represents a serious violation of the human rights of women and newborns.
In Spain, it is estimated that at least 1 in 2 women suffer from it, which represents a major public health problem.
Despite this, this reality continues to be invisibilised, normalised and denied by the medical community and society in general.
Vulnerables makes obstetric violence visible and reveals it through the portraits and testimonies of its victims.
OBSTETRIC VIOLENCE
O.V. is a highly topical issue both nationally and globally.
In Spain today, medical institutions refuse to accept this reality and even reject the term and refer to it as offensive.
Its structural and institutional nature means that this type of gender-based violence is often ignored and normalised, both by the professionals who practice it and by the victims themselves.
"A reflection and mobilisation of our society for the human rights of women and babies is urgent and necessary.
It is said that victims do not have a voice, but we do. What we say here may not change the world,
but deciding that we have the right to say it does.
